On Friday, May 11, 420 students from the U of M’s College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences (CFANS) walked across the stage at 3M Arena at Mariucci to receive their hard-earned diplomas. Land O’Lakes President and CEO Chris Policinski was honored to provide the keynote address.

U of M connections: His passion for the U of M runs deep, and he recognizes the potential for innovation and discovery that the U contributes to the food and ag industries. In fact, he visits campus on a regular basis, speaking with small groups, attending classes to work through case studies with students, and recruiting tomorrow’s industry leaders to bring their talents to Land O’Lakes. Policinski is a valued member of the Board of Trustees of the University of Minnesota Foundation.

Words of advice: Policinski had some advice for the graduates looking toward their future careers, focusing on the opportunity, challenge, and obligation that lies ahead.

“You are about to enter the greatest growth industry of our time–one in which you all have the opportunity to have great careers. … We are going to have to provide up to 70 percent more food to feed this hungry planet by 2050. … And we’re going to have to do this with very limited resources. … But we can grow more with less. We’ve done it before. It’s you who are going to develop the next great modern business practices to meet this grand challenge. … And you have the obligation to tell the story about the great opportunity [for growth], the grand challenge [of growing more with less], and the tools farmers need to use to deliver on both–in a way that builds trust in modern on-farm practices.”
