Sydney Larson: Land O’Lakes Scholar (Squared)

Thursday, April 18, 2019 - 12:30pm

Sydney Larson, U of M Class of 2019, is a unique Land O’Lakes scholar: she’s a current recipient of both the Land O’Lakes Scholarship and the Land O'Lakes Multifunctional Agricultural & Food Systems Scholarship. Below, Sydney talks about her diverse interests and activities, and the impact that support from Land O’Lakes has had on her undergraduate experience.

Q: What are you studying, and what are you involved in outside of the classroom? My major is Environmental Sciences, Policy and Management at the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences (CFANS), with a minor in Spanish Studies. I’m a contributing writer for the Latin American News Digest, translating and summarizing news articles from Latin American sources to provide accessible coverage to English speakers. I also work as an admissions ambassador for prospective U of M students, have been a research assistant for the Center for Dendrochronology, completed a service-learning project with The Good Acre, and served as a University Honors Program ambassador and mentor.

Q: What has been your proudest moment at the U of M? When I enrolled at the University of Minnesota, my field of study was undecided. I am proud to have found a place within CFANS, with a degree program that has enough flexibility to encompass my diverse interests and make me excited about the future.

Q: How has support from Land O’Lakes impacted your college experiences? Learning that Land O’Lakes gifted me with two scholarships brought an indescribable sense of relief. The financial support meant that I could accept valuable—yet unpaid—internships and volunteer positions.

Last spring, I spent a semester in the Peruvian Amazon studying biodiversity and development. It’s because of the support from Land O’Lakes that I’ve been able to enhance my education in these ways.

Q: What’s next? After graduation this spring, I want to leverage my skills and knowledge to drive responsible natural resource management at the corporate level. In the future, I also hope to earn an M.B.A.

“Scholarship support from Land O’Lakes has allowed me to embrace diverse opportunities and remain open to new paths, fostering experiences that will continue to shape my future.”
